What can Caregivers do?

We are asked this question by most people who call to inquire about our service – what all can your caregivers do? First, you need to know, just what is Covenant Caregivers? We are a non-medical home care agency – that’s what the “industry” calls us – not a real intriguing description – but it’s the best we’ve got for now. Non-medical home care covers a lot of ground and can be a solution for many senior adults looking for help.

One way I’ve answered the question for some is, “Our caregivers can do just about anything your son or daughter might do for you when they come to visit.” Maybe a load of laundry, a trip to the doctor or beauty shop, a change of season in your closet, some organization of your desk or pantry, and so on – these are all things we can do. But to let your sons and daughters be, well, sons and daughters, our caregivers are trained and experienced to do so much more. Assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) includes help with bathing, dressing, grooming, and nutrition. Some of these tasks may be putting you at risk for a fall or other accident which you want to avoid at all costs. A caregiver may assist you at all levels – standing by in case of emergency or offering hands on, compassionate care to ensure safety. Medication reminders are also critical for many clients, whether needed due to memory loss or starting a new medication with uncertain side effects. The list could truly go on and on and on. A caregiver, backed by a team of support at the agency’s office, is your advocate. He or she is there to maximize your independence while providing necessary support for safety and wellness.

It’s also important to know what non-medical home care is not. There will always be needs that must be addressed by the appropriate healthcare professional, not the caregiver. Things like lab work, wound care, assessment of a chronic illness, etc. These are tasks often carried out by a medical home health company. We have many mutual clients with home health, hospice, and therapy providers – together, we strive for the best possible outcomes. We’d be happy to discuss your individual situation to obtain the results you’re looking for.
