The senior adults we serve have led remarkable lives full of honors and accomplishments, so to offer help at this time in their lives is an honor and a privilege we don’t take lightly. Caregiving can take many forms and includes a wide variety of activities.
Just as the tasks of caregiving vary widely, so do the types of people who become professional caregivers. In an agency setting like Covenant Caregivers, the real magic happens when the right caregiver is matched with the right client. A good match means that the skills, abilities, and personality of the caregiver align well with the needs and desires of the client.
We like to use the following graphic to summarize what our clients are looking for which guides us in selecting the best match.
- Does the ability of the caregiver match the needs of the client?
- Does the caregiver carry out tasks with compassion?
- Is the caregiver timely with the way in which he/she completes the work?
- Does the caregiver have good verbal communication skills?
- Does the caregiver show initiative by taking care of things?
- Is the caregiver able to follow directions of the client?
Some things, like compassion, cannot be taught. People who choose the caregiving professional must have an innate desire to serve others. You may have all the skill (i.e., ability) in the world, but if you can’t deliver that skill with compassion, caregiving is not the right profession for you. On the other hand, those who are drawn to serve and draw great internal reward from helping others can be taught most any caregiving skill and become quite successful.
