According to the National Institute on Aging, Dementia is the loss of cognitive functioning — thinking, remembering, and reasoning — to such an extent that it interferes with a person’s daily life and activities. Dementia is a broad (“umbrella”) term for an individual’s changes in memory, thinking or reasoning. Alzheimer’s Disease is the largest “spoke” on the umbrella as it is a majority cause of individuals with dementia; however, it is important to understand the other types especially when caring for a loved one.
